This species is the second rarest from the three Pachygraspus spp. recorded in the Maltese islands, the other two being P. marmoratus (common in Malta and the Mediterranean) and P. transversus very rare in central Mediterranean as well in Malta.P. maurus comes from the Macaronesian region and the westernMediterranean (= Spain, the Balearic islands, France and western Italy). Its presence in the eastern Mediterranean is very scarce and even more rare with a very patchily distribion in the central - central-eastern Mediterranean. This species of crab was recently discovered from Hondoq ir-Rummien, Gozo (Maltese islands). It is quite similar to the Mediterranean native crab - Pachygrapsus marmoratus. More information about these crabs can be found on this issue of the Observer (Gozo)
